There are locks for everything these days, including your laptop computer. The popular Kensington lock has become all the rage among those who work in an environment where they would need to safeguard their computer. The Kensington lock may be purchased for around $50, but since it protects a laptop that may have cost more than a thousand dollars it is worth the investment. Right? Well, that depends. If you use a Kensington lock and nobody knows how to pick it then you are ok. But, picking a Kensington lock is really easy so if you use this method to safeguard your computer you should realize it’s not 100% foolproof.

And while Kensington offers insurance on your computer if it is stolen due to brute force. they do not offer any for thieves that uses the following method of picking the Kensington lock. First, get a regular writing pen, an empty toilet paper roll, as well as some duct tape or any kind of tape. Then, cut a small piece of carton out. Just a tiny little rectangle that is not very wide at all and long enough to wrap around the pen a couple times. Now, wrap it around the pen and tape it to hold it in place. Once the carton is rolled up and secure just take the roll and place it in the Kensington lock. Move it around a little and voila, the lock will open! It takes less than a minute to make the roll and open the lock.

Other individuals have also been successful at using a regular ink pen and simply removing the little plastic piece from the end of the pin and using the back of the pen as the key, much like the toilet paper roll. You will have to try both methods to see what works best for you. One thing is for sure and that is opening a Kensington lock is really easy no matter how secure they claim to be.
